What is a T-shirt quilt?
A quilted t-shirt quilt is not just a cozy blanket—it’s a meaningful, personalized keepsake. Unlike regular quilts, each piece in a t-shirt quilt holds a story. Whether it’s shirts from concerts, sports teams, or memorable events, these quilts stitch together cherished memories into one beautiful, functional piece. The quilting adds durability and structure, ensuring the shirts last longer while enhancing the overall design.
How many T-shirts do I need for a quilt?
The number of T-shirts needed depends on the size of the quilt you want. Typically, a lap quilt requires 12-16 shirts, while a full-size quilt may need 30-40. There are piecing options if you don’t have enough T-shirts. Custom piecing can be added on for $7/block. Other parts of the T-shirt can be used, front pocket motifs, sleeve motifs, or fabric options as fillers too!
Can I use other types of clothing for my quilt?
Yes! You can include items like jerseys, sweatshirts, and other special clothing, depending on the fabric type and your preferences. Some items that cannot be used:
- Delicates (silk, lace, etc.)
- Heavy fabrics (denim, leather, wool, etc.)
- Stretchy (lycra, spandex, etc.)
- Embellished fabrics (sequin, beads, rhinestones, etc.)
Should I cut my t-shirts before handing them over?
Please do not cut up the t-shirts prior to relinquishing the clothing. Doing so makes it difficult to apply a stabilizer backing and the t-shirt will roll onto itself when I attempt to stabilize and cut it to size.
What do you do with leftover fabric from each project?
After making your quilt, any leftover fabric can either be returned to you or recycled. Just let us know your preference.
Can I choose the fabric backing and sashing colors?
The colors you pick for the sashing (the fabric strips between your T-shirts) and backing can bring your quilt to life, and they can be chosen to complement the theme or colors of your T-shirts. For example:
Helpful Tools: To make choosing colors easier, consider using paint swatches, fabric samples, or even printed patterns to visualize how different shades will work with your T-shirts. You can compare these with the shirts to see what complements or contrasts best. Sometimes a printed fabric for the backing can add a fun or meaningful touch too, depending on the quilt’s theme.
Matching the Theme: If your T-shirts have a specific theme—like a sports team, school colors, or a travel collection—you can choose sashing and backing colors that highlight or blend well with that theme. For instance, school spirit quilts often use the school’s colors, while vacation or beach-themed quilts might look great with blues or sandy tones.
If you need additional help, I can offer guidance but will always gain your approval before moving forward!
How do I care for my quilt?
Your quilt is machine washable. We recommend using cold water on a gentle cycle and air drying or tumble drying on low heat to preserve the fabric.
